Rules and Obligations of Membership
Rule One: Qualifications
By joining the North Star Transgender, Intersex, and Gender Identity online support group, you are certifying that you are a man or woman whose intention in joining is to receive and/or give support for living the principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ as you strive to better understand and respond to the feelings and thoughts you are experiencing. Men and women who do not deal with issues with regard to gender identity are also welcome to join as long as their sole intention is to give support or increase in understanding for giving support to others. Anyone who joins under false pretenses will be immediately removed.
Note: We affirm the teaching of modern prophets that "Each [person] is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and...[that] gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose" (The Family: A Proclamation to the World).
Gender, in this context, refers to a person's eternal, spiritual identity as either male or female, an inherent characteristic. Some individuals may have ambiguous genetic characteristics that make it difficult to determine gender. These individuals are sometimes referred to as "intersexed." In other cases, a person's gender may be determinate, but he or she may feel a strong dissonance between physical gender and his or her internal sense of gender identity. This dissonance is sometimes called "Gender Identity Disorder" or "gender dysphoria" and such individuals may identify as "transgender" or "transsexual."
Transgender feelings do not necessarily determine or reflect sexual orientation. A transgender person may self-identify as heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual.
