Steering Committee Membership Application

Thank you for your interest in joining the North Star Steering Committee discussion forum. Each membership application is reviewed for appropriateness. The purpose of this list is to:

1. Discuss ways to develop North Star as an organization and to further its mission, such as website content and development, educational and promotional materials, activities and events planning, and other ways to strengthen and educate members of the Church in regards to this issue.


2. Help and support those who are committed to the Church in strengthening and educating Church members, leaders, and others, and to find more effective ways of doing so. For instance, someone dealing with relatives or ward members struggling to understand or respond compassionately to the issue; individuals trying to explain the Church’s position to those subscribing to secular or culturally "gay-affirming" philosophies; those who manage Church-supportive websites.


3. Provide help and support for students, educators, therapists, and others who are engaged in assisting Church members and others to find resolution with their homosexual attractions, when those areas overlap with the mission and purpose of North Star.

The North Star Steering Committee is not a place to voice questions or concerns about the Church if you waver in belief or are unsure of what direction you desire to go in responding to same-gender attractions. The North Star Online Discussion Groups are likely more appropriate places to find that kind of support and discussion.

This list is generally not a place to engage in doctrinal speculation, unless the speculation is directly related to the items above.

Members of the list may openly discuss scientific or other literature describing theories regarding the development of homosexual orientation or healthful ways of helping members to respond to their feelings. Members may also openly discuss gay-affirmative or anti-Mormon literature and assertions, along with methods of dealing with them. We also discuss ways in which we can increasingly improve North Star and the resources it provides.

Truthfully, the list is not for everybody; individual interests, temperaments, and needs vary. While Church membership is not a requirement to join the North Star Steering Committee, the list is only for members or friends of the Church who are committed to the same ideals regarding the values and behavioral standards of the Church.

The North Star Steering Committee daily e-mail volume varies but can be as high as several messages per day.

We require that North Star Steering Committee participants be financially contributing members of North Star. Each committee member must make at least a $25 annual monetary contribution to North Star to help defray the costs associated with running the organization. All such donations are tax deductible for those who file U.S. income tax returns. If you are able and willing to contribute more than $25, we would be very much appreciative, but $25 is all that is required.
