Join us for North Star’s annual Marriage Summit. This is an exciting opportunity to relax, socialize, learn and develop relationship skills that will strengthen your marriage.
The annual North Star Couples Retreat has been expanded into a weekend to give couples a chance to get away, connect as a couple, have fun with other couples and to work on building your relationship. It will be located at the beautiful Zermatt Resort and Spa in Midway, Utah. The retreat will feature a presentation by Debra & Richard McClendon on Friday evening followed by a group social. Saturday we will continue with a in-depth marriage workshop with Dr. Russell Gaede. It will also feature delicious catered meals by the Zermatt on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
Following Saturday mornings workshop, couples will be free to go and participate in many of the activities and events that the Zermatt and surrounding areas offer if they so desire. This is an event you won't want to miss and one that will leave you empowered and strengthened as a couple.
We encourage everyone to stay up at the Zermatt Resort and Spa. They are offering discounted room rentals for $89 a night, which are available until October 16th. Also, registration for the Couples Retreat is discounted if you stay the night at the Zermatt. Below is the link for hotel reservations. Rates are available for two days before and two days after the retreat if you desire to stay longer at the Zermatt. Be sure to modify your dates of stay at the top of the webpage.

Debra Theobald McClendon, PhD, PLLC
Dr. McClendon is a licensed psychologist in the state of Utah. She is a Clinical Psychologist with training in Marriage and Family Therapy. She focuses her practice on helping those with anxiety and OCD (including Scrupulosity), emotional regulation, depression, grief, trauma/crisis, or marriage/relationship issues. Dr. McClendon has published articles on anxiety and obsessive compulsive disorder (Scrupulosity) in the Ensign. She has co-authored book chapters and articles on outcome assessment and group therapy in the academic community. On a personal note, Dr. McClendon enjoys working-out, reading, mountain views, doing puzzles, reading to her kiddos, sitting on the deck in the evening with her hubby, and eating spicy garden salsa and dark chocolate with mint (but not together).
Richard J. McClendon
Richard J. McClendon has been an associate director in the office of Institutional Assessment and Analysis at Brigham Young University since 2008. Prior to this position, he spent two years as the research director for the Economic Self-Reliance Center in the Marriott School of Management at BYU. He has also taught in the Department of Sociology at BYU and as an adjunct professor in the Department of Religious Education. Before coming to BYU, he spent several years teaching for the LDS Church Education System as a seminary and institute instructor. He received both his PhD in sociology and his MEd in Educational Leadership from Brigham Young University. He has worked as a research consultant and has conducted research in various areas of education, religion, family, and business. On a personal note, Dr. McClendon enjoys biking, basketball, photography, and music.
The McClendons have co-authored a book: "Commitment to the Covenant: Strengthening the Me, We, and Thee of Marriage." They give strengthening marriage presentations at BYU's Education Week.
Dr. Russell Gaede
Dr. Russell Gaede’s life is an inspiring example of how to overcome obstacles and reach your potential. Dr. Russ went from High School drop out to becoming a college professor with a Doctorate in Psychology. As a kid, he was in leg braces and had a difficult time running – he has since become an avid cyclist and long distance runner who has biked and run thousands of miles. Having struggled with severe speech impediments and a diagnoses of Tourette Syndrome, Dr. Russ now makes his living as a speaker, consultant and counselor. Dr. Russ is a successful entrepreneur having built a million dollar business as a therapist. He is the author of multiple books, has been featured on various TV and radio programs and broke the world record hosting the world’s longest uninterrupted live webcast.
